Listening and Speaking

Helping your child to put words to feelings develops vocabulary in a meaningful way. Children can understand the words long before they can say them.

You can talk not only about your child’s feelings, but about yours as well, especially
at Halloween time with pumpkins and Jack-O-Lanterns and people in costumes that may frighten a child or make them feel uncertain or intrigued, but also unsure of them.  This is a good time to talk about how children feel about pumpkins with a face—Jack-O-Lanterns or other images associated with Halloween.

You can talk about how you felt as a child at Halloween.  This is a good time to touch in with your child.  It’s a fun time, but also a challenging time with lots of things
happening—all at once.
