4. Early Literacy Tip:

Pre-Literacy Tip—The Joy of Giving

The Winter holidays, whether it be Hannukah, Kwanzaa or Christmas, is a splendid time to teach children about the joy of giving. Help your children to make presents for people they love - a coloring book picture for Daddy, a card for Mommy. Young children can also help in making cookies (stirring the dough, sprinkling the sprinkles) to give to Grandma and Grandpa. Along the way they will feel the joy, as will you, in seeing the happiness that comes with giving while you share these activities together!
                     Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
See you in Storytime, Ms. Lauren

Mr. Turkey
I have a turkey, big and fat.
(Make a fist with one hand-thumb out for turkey's head)
He spreads his tail and walks like that.
(Open your fingers and wobble your hand)
His daily corn he would not miss.
(Poke with thumb at floor)
And when he talks,
it sounds like this:
Gobble-Gobble-Gobble!
(wiggle thumb)
Some Families
 Some families are large
(spread arms out wide)
Some families are small
(bring arms close together)
But I love my family
(cross arms over chest)
best of all!

4. Early Literacy Tip:

Pre-Literacy Tip—Cognition and General Knowledge—The World We Live In—Physical and Social

Thanksgiving is a sweet time to cook with your child, such as letting them pour in the (premeasured) flour or to stir the cake batter or spoon the cookie dough onto the cookie pan, something that is appropriate to their age and ability. When you cook with your child, talk about what you are doing to help him or her to understand all the steps involved.  Such experiences serve children well when they try to understand the world around them.    And, these time make for marvelous memories to cherish, too.

Helping children to see the order in which things take place, whether in a book like Orange Pear Apple Bear, in a recipe for applesauce, in the sequence of a day, helps them to develop the mathematical concept of sequencing.

Listening and Speaking

Pug & Pig Trick or Treat, illustration from the book, by Joyce Wan

Helping your child to put words to feelings develops vocabulary in a meaningful way. Children can understand the words long before they can say them.

You can talk not only about your child’s feelings, but about yours as well, especially
at Halloween time with pumpkins and Jack-O-Lanterns and people in costumes that may frighten a child or make them feel uncertain or intrigued, but also unsure of them.  This is a good time to talk about how children feel about pumpkins with a face—Jack-O-Lanterns or other images associated with Halloween.

You can talk about how you felt as a child at Halloween.  This is a good time to touch in with your child.  It’s a fun time, but also a challenging time with lots of things
happening—all at once.

3. EARLY LITERACY TIP FOR PARENTS

 Building Resilience in Our Children

Kitten's First Full Moon, illustration from the book, by Kevin Henkes
The Pre-Literacy Tip for Episode 11 is on helping our children to overcome disappointment, find  comfort and satisfaction in what does come our way and so, build resilience.  Life rarely gives us exactly what we think we want.  Growing into acceptance on what we do have is a milestone for anyone.
The saying, “if life gives you lemons, make lemonade” comes to mind. For example, when you bring your child to the library and Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons is what your child wants, but—Oh No—its checked out—How about trying another Pete the Cat book for now and place the one that was really wanted, on hold, to pick up a few days later?  Along the way, the librarian can also help you find other fun books on cats, dogs, unicorns, or dragons or whatever your heart desires.

Making lemonade out of lemons can also  help with learning the behavior called “delayed gratification. “ There is a lot in life to navigate for children.  What a blessing to have them re-open our eyes!

Kitten's First Full Moon, illustration from the book, by Kevin Henkes

In Episode 11:  Cats,  thanks to Pete the Cat, we know that “Buttons come and buttons go” and if we make the best of what we have, then “happiness is  just around the corner.”

           See you at Storytime,  Lauren
